Her mother didn't love Asuka herself... As a matter of fact, Dr. Sohryu Zeppelin only recognized a little doll as her real daughter (that's why Asuka shows contempt towards all doll-like objects or people, such as EVA Units and Ayanami Rei) Confused Most important, "Mama" Sohryu commited suicide the very same day Asuka was selected as an EVA pilot Sad . I guess that'd be the most relevant events in Asuka's childhood... No wonder she's so disturbed Neutral .

It was partly because her mother's soul was sucked into the Eva, leaving a broken shell. I do think that Kyoko Soryu should've been given a bigger role in the story.
