Martian Successor Nadesico

Martian Successor Nadesico started out as a comic book created by Kia Asamiya and ended up being transferred to anime in 1996. The series main character is Akito Tenkawa who was the sole survivor of the attack on Mars by the Jovian Lizards from Jupiter in the year 2195 that became known as the "First Battle of Mars". (that is until later in the series he gets reunited with a little girl named Ai who was talking with him on Mars and was presumed dead with the other habitants).
A year later, Akito is a fry cook trying to forget about the incident. However, the Jovian Lizards return and Akito's fear of them causes him to get fired at the restaurant he was working in. While job hunting, he gets re-united with 20 year-old Yurika Misumaru who was Akito's former neighbor on Mars, and lover who dedicated her life to making his life a living hell. When he follows her to Nergal Heavy Industries, Akito learns that Yurika is the captain of the High Mobile Battleship Nadesico that will embark on a journey to defeat the Jovian Lizards. Soon he becomes not only a fry cook on the Nadesico, but an Aestivalis robot pilot. And so the Nadesico, run by a selected group of civilians, heads to Mars and beyond.
