Ash is a great character! He may have been rather annoying in the beginning, but have you even seen the latest episodes of the anime? He's much more mature now, and although he and his friends do fall for Team Rockets most obvious disguises he's a great trainer. Technically speaking they've been following Ash around for 10 years, and since Ash or any of the characters in Pok*emon don't really age so he's still 10 years old.
