I have episodes 1-175 on DVD, and I've seen that Naruto does hint that he likes Hinata. In the episode where she fights Neji, Naruto cheers her on and got seriously pissed when she got beat up. Before Naruto went to go fight Neji, he was talking to her and said ''I like people like you''(to her). In episode #149 he hugs her for helping him, and in #151 he got pissed at the people who kidnapped her and told him she was dead, he almost cried and turned into Kuubyi Naruto. When she talks, he always listens.
